TAFS Homes
On February 25, 2008, Travelers Aid Family Services became the owner of this three family building on Marion Street in East Boston. This is the second property purchased by this agency as part of its TAFS Homes program and families began to move in on June 1, 2008. We would like to recognize the generosity of the following organizations who helped make this project a reality: Mayor Thomas Menino and The City of Boston State Street Foundation, Inc. On May 1st, 2007, three formerly homeless families moved into this three unit house in Dorchester to continue their journey to self-sufficiency as part of the TAFS Homes program. Program Overview: The ultimate goal of Travelers Aid Family Services (TAFS) is to help homeless families regain their self-sufficiency and become contributing members of their communities. Because of the success of the three units of affordable housing created by the TAFS Homes program in Dorchester in 2007, this agency decided to expand the program. The newest initiative for TAFS is the development of three units of permanent, affordable, family housing in East Boston. The acquisition of these properties has allowed Travelers Aid Family Services to actualize a program design that not only provides affordable housing for homeless families, but also guides the families towards true self-sufficiency and, ideally, home ownership. TAFS Homes is unique in that the affordable housing offered is designed to assist the under-served population of homeless families. While living in these units, these families are supported by Travelers Aid Family Services' case management in order to enhance incomes, learn budgeting and other life skills, establish Individual Savings Accounts, and other tools to help guarantee their continued success. Prospective tenants come from families enrolled in other programs administered by Travelers Aid Family Services or from programs involved collaboratively with this agency. The TAFS Homes Tenant Selection Committee is comprised of individuals from the agency's staff and the Community Advisory Board. The first three units developed by the TAFS Homes program were at the Dorchester site, and the addition of the East Boston property doubles the number of units that Travelers Aid Family Services can offer. The overall plan of this program is to continue developing additional units as resources permit.
