Prevention and Stabilization

Our Prevention and Stabilization Program helps families who seek our services because they are in danger of becoming homeless due to a temporary reversal of circumstances. We offer them direct, need-based financial assistance to address the issues that are putting their housing in danger, e.g. rent and utility arrearages (funds permitting). Help is offered in a case management setting, with financial planning and other support services offered. We receive support from Gillette/P&G, United Way Special Fund, The City of Boston and others for this critical effort. Over the last fiscal year, our prevention efforts were able to help 211 families (including 485 children) remain in their current housing and addressed the underlying causes of their instability.

Travelers Aid Family Services is also part of the Homes for Families/Boston Foundation Prevention Initiative. The Initiative is a partnership between four agencies which assist homeless families in various capacities with the goal of preventing primary homelessness and is funded by The Boston Foundation. The renewed grant from TBF allows these agencies to continue enhancing their homeless prevention efforts.

Prevention and stabilization services are provided on a case by case basis to those who are suffering from an acute crisis threatening their housing with no other resources available to them. Applicants must live in the City of Boston, have children under the age of 18 and be at-risk of losing their housing. Certain income guidelines apply.
