Family Emergency Shelter

Families lose their housing due to a wide variety of reasons, including illegal evictions, language differences, poor housing conditions, domestic violence, medical problems, fire and other natural disasters, and financial hardship. The Family Emergency Shelter program operates around the clock to provide families with emergency, short-term shelter. Case managers work with parents to find more appropriate long-term housing, while helping the families adjust to the difficulties of becoming homeless and assessing their need for services that optimize their future housing stability.

When appropriate, families for whom there are safety concerns such as domestic violence or criminal victimization are referred to more focused resources.

The program aims to help each family sustain and build upon the resources they have when entering the program, such as employment, education, day care, programs for the children, and family supports. As the City of Boston’s emergency primary resource for homeless families, we are often the entry point for homeless families in need of support services.

In the last fiscal year, 168 children from 86 families were served by the Family Emergency Shelter program.

To utilize Family Emergency Shelter, a family must be homeless, have children under the age of 18, and have most recently resided in Boston. Families also must be ineligible for state-funded Emergency Assistance (EA) or an applicant for EA without shelter options. We have an on-call staff in place if you are in need of Family Emergency Shelter on nights, weekends, or at any other time that our offices are closed. They can be reached through the Mayor’s Hotline at 617-635-4500.
